Welcome to our first newsletter for the year.
The year has started off at a sprint and we at mexec are looking forward to a productive and busy year.
Check out our list of conferences near the end of the newsletter. Its extensive, but if you are like me, it’s great to be able to finally plan for the year rather than be reactive. If you have something you would like to include whether it be industry or academic please let us know.
Also, a reminder to watch out and keep safe from COVID. I am writing this intro in isolation due to my second bout. Just on Thursday the latest ATAGI recommendations have come out here if you have not seen them.
We look forward to connecting with you this year.
Cheers
Marilyn Jones

WILD for Stem Launch
Feeling inspired after attending the WILD for STEM‘s 2024 Launch event held in Sydney recently.
It was fabulous to hear about the journey of Anna Bligh, the first female premier of Queensland, who shared her pearls of wisdom on leadership, diversity and overcoming the fear of failure.
Here’s to a year of growth, success, and endless possibilities for 2024 WILD Program cohort! We look forward to watching with interest the WILD women on their journeys as they transition in their careers
Lorne Cancer
Great to be back in person at Lorne Cancer conference to start the year off.
It was a very busy conference with many local and international delegates.
Talks and posters covered many areas of cancer including themes of paediatric and adult brain tumours, cancer dependencies and functional genomics, breast cancer genomics and oncology translational research.
Lorne Genome
Conference 2 for the year was all about genomics. Another great turn out and learnings on the latest in genomics including chromosome structure, regulation of gene expression and RNA regulation systems biology.
The opening welcome to country and smoking ceremony was particularly inspiring.
Lorne Infection & Immunity
Antimicrobial resistance is of particular interest to me and it was a very fascinating talk from Trevor Lithgow from Monash on utilisation of phages to treat bacterial infections.
Their group is discovering multiple new phages across Melbourne’s water systems and collaborating with Aboriginal elders to name them. They are building a very comprehensive biobank ethically. Fascinating research and impact.
BioMelbourne mRNA
Marilyn and Sue attended the 2024 BioMelbourne, mRNA Victoria and the State Government 2024 mRNA Lecture in February.
There were many key take home messages including outlining the difficulties around delivery systems, potency, manufacturing and regulations.
Of particular interest was how to build the mRNA workforce capacity, capability and experience in Australia.
Great to hear about how Monash Centre for Advanced mRNA Medicines Manufacturing and Workforce Training is developing tailored professional development programs to address mRNA skills gaps.
BioMelbourne Event – Advancing Non Animal Models in Biomedical Research
Sue was able to attend an in person BioMelbourne event on Advancing Non Animal Models in Biomedical Research.
Non-animal models have significant potential benefits: they reflect human-specific diseases, could reduce drug development time and costs, decrease drug failure rates in clinical trials and result in more effective and cheaper treatments for patients.
Prof Carl Kirkpatrick Professor of Pharmacy at Monash University gave a fascinating talk on quantitative pharmacology and its application in model informed drug development and discovery.
Laura Thomas outlined CSIRO’s recent report on this subject. Ella Robinson from Australian Ethical Investment gave some great insights into the ethics around investing into companies with an ethical lens.
Christos Papadimitriou, from Tessara Therapeutics facilitated the discussion.
MDHS Graduate Research Conference
Sue Forrest and Marilyn Jones had the privilege of presenting the mexec jobstrategy™ program to Ph.D & Masters students at the recent The University of Melbourne Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS) Graduate Research conference satellite meeting.
One of the areas we covered included the key practicalities and formulae on how to write an engaging CV for the many different roles across industry and academia. Standing out from others is essential and ensuring that your writing and pitch is clear, different, and succinct.
Monash University Postgraduate Association Career Networking Evening
Sue was invited to be part of the panel discussing career opportunities and how to stand out from other applicants. The session focused on moving from Academia to Industry and what challenges that might present. The speakers had some common threads including; Be authentic, network, develop business acumen, and develop interpersonal skills.
