This month’s newsletter is jam-packed with events that the mexec team have been involved in, as well as an ever-increasing list of events to keep in mind as we head towards, and into, 2024.
Skills development and labour shortages are on the agenda at BioMelbourne’s upcoming BioForum: Bridging the Talent Gap – Fostering a skilled workforce event. I will be on the panel alongside members from MTP Connect and the Victorian Medtech Skills and Devices Hub, discussing ‘how we can make sure that companies have the right people to manage them, and how to strike a better balance between importing talent from overseas and growing talent locally’.
Post lockdowns, life has become more plannable and less reactive. As a result, the mexec team were able to come together for a two-day ‘Clarity Days’ workshop, to develop and clarify our purpose and consider ‘whats next?’. Read more here.
Reminder: Hope you’ve managed to keep up to date with the recommended booster roster, you can check out it here if you’re not sure.
As always, please reach out to me directly if you would like suggest an event or topic for inclusion in this newsletter.
Cheers
Marilyn Jones

It’s no secret of recruitment that your network has tremendous value. Through building your personal and professional networks, you can create a lasting, tangible asset to further develop your career.
It’s important to consider the approach best suited to you. Beyond the skills, capabilities, and experience you’re recognised for, those who encounter you will by and large create their own concept of who you are based on your personal qualities. How you encounter them will be largely on your terms…

Clarity Day
The mexec team recently undertook a two-day workshop to develop and clarify our purpose, operations, and ‘what’s next?’ for the company.
Listening to the team’s thoughts on these points was insightful and highly productive.
The benefits of age and gender diversity were evident, reinforcing the significant value they bring to collaborative change.
Bringing the team together was the best way forward as a company and gave us clarity around our purpose as mexec – ‘connecting people for success’.

Talk at the Centenary Institute
It was wonderful to catch up with Professor Marc Pellegrini & Dr Anand Gururajan from the Centenary Institute in Sydney.
It was the first in-person seminar I have done since before COVID, on our mexec jobstrategy™ program.
Great to be talking with scientists at many levels about their future career opportunities and the practicalities of making sure they stand out in the crowd.
If you’re an Institute or University Department looking to support the development of your staff to understand how to transition out of academia then reach out to mexec.
We can support you with online or in person sessions across Australia.

ARCS and Events
Both Marilyn and I attended #2023ARCS, rotating between the mexec booth and some incredible talks on current best practices, updates from the TGA and OGTR, careers in the MTP sector, current national initiatives, cyber security, and many other important topics. I am thankful for the opportunity to have talked with so many great people over the course of the week, who shared their stories and experiences of working in the clinical trials sector. Many thanks to the team at ARCS Australia for holding such an excellent conference and I look forward to next years’.
BioShares
Bioshares Biotech Summit was held this year in Hobart, Tasmania. Two full days of great talks on the latest Biotechs and innovations across Australia.
Next year is still to be decided, however we’re looking forward to hearing more on where and when.
The above photo is from the dinner event on the last night of BioShares. So lovely to catch up with old, new, and future friends from across Australia’s Biotech sector.’
RCSA Day & Events About Recruitment
Marilyn attended TalentX in Sydney in May, where she spent the day listening to talks and visiting stands showcasing the latest in Recruitment and Executive Search companies and processes.
Areas covered included how we build and leverage our brands to differentiate ourselves, how we maximise our engagement, reach and relevance and ways to ensure that we continue to enhance and nurture existing clients and candidates.
Always good to keep on top of the latest trends.
BioMelbourne Event
Just one of the many events that BioMelbourne have held. Marilyn attended the event on Hospital Beds to Healthy Lives: The Impact of Innovative Medicines. Great to hear some statistics on how new medicines have impacted Australian lives.
WILD Retreat
Marilyn was recently invited to the WILD Executive Leadership Retreat In Mount Tambourine, Queensland, where she spoke with more than 30 members of the current cohort.
We delved into understanding the WHY behind the CV of an Executive Director and discussed ways to open the doors to a NED career, highlighting the power of your network.
Futures Networking and Development Night
Marilyn and Sue recently were on a panel and ‘speed dating’ event at The University of Melbourne’s ‘The Futures Networking Careers Night’.
The theme was: “Talking about the jump that no one talks about”
The night was for PhD and postdocs to investigate options for their careers outside of academia.
This event was funded by the Research Development Unit Initiative Grants & the Department of Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology and Immunology Biochemistry and Pharmacology at The University of Melbourne. Special thanks for the invite and photo with Ben Czapla from their organising committee.
AGRF
Marilyn caught up with Jessica Poy whom we placed at AGRF as their COO, and also Cath Moore at their stand the recent International Congress on Genomics.
International Genetics Conference
Marilyn attended the XXIII International Congress of Genetics in Melbourne in July.
It was a truly global forum that brought together the international genetics community to share ideas and the latest research under the overarching theme: Genetics & Genomics: Linking Life & Society.
As a member of AGTA, it was also lovely for Sue and myself to catch up with many of their ANZ members at their dinner event. Thanks also to PACBIO for our invite to their great evening networking event.
Informa – Bio Connections Australia
Great updates from Vaxxas on their growth trajectory and from Moderna outlining their commitment to mRNA manufacturing here.
Panels tackled important issues, including the funding environment and opportunities for enhanced collaboration. The age-old chestnut of “import the talent from overseas versus grow this locally” was raised. Whilst there are horses for some courses, growth of local talent remains vital for the sector.
